Outside, an airplane flies low over the beach. The Piper Tri-Pacer. Again. It spits and rattles. Its four different sets of radios, none of which works consistently, screech and pop.

It flies low over the condos. Circles back, its engine groaning. Then returns. It’s not Monday or Wednesday, but it is definitely him, Sophie thinks and is dizzy. Angry. Glad Wilson is not around. She feels her way to the telephone and picks it up. Her father had a voice-activated dialer installed on her phone. “Who would you like to speak to?” the computerized voice asks. It’s a woman’s voice, mid-western, pleasant, expectant. Mr. Whit programmed in forty-three numbers for Sophie to use; forty-three numbers he felt she needed. She had Wilson program in one more.

She hesitates.

“I’m sorry?” the voice says. “I’m afraid I didn’t catch the name.”

The voice sounds so hopeful and kind. And all Sophie has to do is say who she wants to call, and the computer will dial the number.

“I’m sorry. I’m having a hard time hearing you.”

The Piper Tri-Pacer circles again and its engine stalls a bit. Sophie holds her breath, prays. A moment passes and the engine recovers. Sounds strong. She’s relieved. But still, the plane is so low that she can feel its rattle as if it were the beat of her own heart.

Damn him.

“Would you like to try again later?” the voice asks.

“No,” Sophie says.

“Okay.” The voice sounds so bright. “Then who is it that you’d like to call?”

The Piper Tri-Pacer takes another low turn.

The name is said. The number is dialed. Sophie has no choice. It’s what he wants, after all. As usual, he won’t give up until she gives in.
